» Bit Shifter [New York, NY, USA]
New York City's Bit Shifter weighs in with a blitzkrieg strike of semiautomatic pixel fire, delivered from a twin Nintendo Game Boy assault rig. Exemplifying a bracing distillation of the less-is-more philosophy, Bit Shifter embraces limitations and eschews overstated indulgences in favor of the streamlined environment of the Nanoloop and Little Sound DJ home-brew Game Boy musicmaking software. Armed only with two 20-year-old handhelds, Bit Shifter leaves high-end computer music choking on his exhaust, bringing twice the rock with 0.002% of the processing power.

Miller has performed and lectured internationally, but also curates 8static, a monthly chip music show in his hometown of Philadlephia.

Pulsewave - 05.30.09 - minusbaby, Lutin, Adams/Stern, JYK, noteNdo and Paris
$10

Stravinsky, Nijinsky, Roerich and Diaghilev captured it in 1913. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas picked it up again in 1964. It's the feeling of Spring and the urge to dance in the streets.
With the change of seasons comes an unbuttoning of shirts, a raising of skirts, a lowering of inhibitions and the urge to cut loose as the grass grows under tapping toes.
This month’s Pulsewave is here to help.
-------------------------
minusbaby trades in counterpoint, subtle dissonances and surprises. While it may be impossible to predict what will happen at each performance, one constant can be expected: a forceful equatorial beat. Each familiar song is given new variation while the center holds it down with a bassy bottom end to make anything bump and bounce that hasn't been tied down. Around this nucleus will undoubtedly spin surprise guest after surprise guest as the maestrobaby explodes the very meaning of 8-bit orchestration.
-------------------------
Lutin’s first Pulsewave has been too long coming, but walking from. He's a practiced hand at multiple disciplines of Game Boy composition and a cursory glance at people's comments on his music will reveal the wonder and awe he inspires in those who aspire to some day have such complete control over a medium. His sound synthesis style is unique and his songs tease emotion out of the listener with energy and inescapable feelings of free motion and highflying grace. In other words, Lutin can make you feel both elated and elevated.

You may have seen Natty perform a few times before, but before he departs for his Indian adventure, he wants to throw a little on-stage going away party. For the first time he won't be alone up there: Teddy and Arden Stern of Edward:Mastermind have joined forces with him to embark on a collective venture known, for now, simply as Adams/Stern. This is a first glimpse of things to come and some surprises endeavor to leave the audience both aurally and visually stimulated. The band plans on rocking.

For your ocular edification you'll witness permutative pairings of a triumvirate pool of vjs par excellence: handheld microcoding master, Paris, circuit circumventing genius, noteNdo, and graphical producer and manipulator, JYK. Look forward to looking forward because if you turn around you'll be missing out.

» Dr. Von Pnok [Rennes, France]
Coming straight out of an old dusty lab, Dr. Von Pnok is not your average mad doctor. Inspired by composers like Koji Kondo or Aphex Twin, the failed scientist tries to digest his influences using old music formats. Living as a recluse in his pixelized mansion, Pnok is obsessed by the art of programming chips and bending toys. Precise and unhurried, he tirelessly spends every night experimenting the science of DIY. With a unique combination of fast breakbeats and powerfull pulses, he creates a disturbed Lo-Fi music aimed to the brainfloor.

» Je Deviens DJ en 3 Jours [Nice, France]
The DJ became the icon of a generation brainwashed by an unhealthy idea according to which music comes down to press on a PLAY/PAUSE button. The way this music goes shows itself the standardization of a mass culture fueled by obsolete medias intended for lobotomized preteens.
He might be cute, french (some say still virgin), but he took it upon himself to put an end to this trickery : On the 25th of April, Je deviens dj en 3 jours will try to give a new approach of the Nintendo Gameboy : Heavy Beat, Distorted Bass and Girls dancing all over the night.

Pulsewave - 03.28.09 - gwEm & Counter Reset / Trash80 / Nullsleep /Paris Treantafeles / outpt
$10

After countless concerts and dozens of performers from around the world, come and help us celebrate the third anniversary of Pulsewave, one of the most unique monthly showcases in New York City.
Whatever you call it -- lowbit, bitpop, chip music, chiptune, or Game Boy music -- Pulsewave has been there month after month kicking out solid lineups, cheap ticket prices, and hosting packed houses. If you haven't had a chance this year to check it out The Tank's new home in Times Square, you are in for a treat when three of the chip music community's most dynamic live acts demonstrate how it's done, at exhaustive levels of excellence.
gwEm & Counter Reset
http://www.preromanbritain.com/gwem/
UK native gwEm describes himself as an "Atari ST old-skool rave DJ and heavy metal dude" which succinctly describes his mad scientist formula of custom-made 8-bit software, hardcore rave and driving hard rock guitar. Having seen success on Berlin's Shitkatapult and Muller labels, his own London-based label preromanbritain, net community Micromusic, and a recent "live" release on the 8bitpeoples label with Counter Reset, gwEm makes a rare NYC appearance showcasing his deep catalog of Atari soundchip classics.
Trash80
http://trash80.net/
This California native makes another legendary appearance for the Pulsewave faithful. Hot on the heels of one of 2008's best releases, Icarus, he also finds time to develop fantastic hardware and software to let folks control their Game Boys via MIDI, and masterminding the deaths of numerous Game Boy Color units with his hardware hack, the pro-sound mod. His music, an evocative and tuneful blend of chip and classic electronic instrumentation will have fans and neophytes alike shaking their asses, or any functional equivalents.
Nullsleep
http://www.nullsleep.com/
8bitpeoples founder, Blip Festival organizer, and Pulsewave mainstay qualifies as the third headliner of this incredibly stacked lineup. You know his classic hits, including tracks off his recent Unconditional Acceleration, but be sure to arrive early to catch the full onslaught of his razor sharp live performance and abrasive crowd upbraiding.
Visuals by Pulsewave's own low-bit visual savages:
Paris Treantafeles

outpt
http://pir2.org/
Besides making sure everyone's live photos look cool, this potent duo, using custom software on pocket-size handhelds like the GP2x and Game Boy Advance, will tag team an uncompromising assault on your visual cortex throughout the evening.
And don't miss the stupendous return of the Pulsewave Open Mic! Just bring your 1/8th output-able device and 3 minutess of your most killer material, and step up before the show begins, to show off your works in progress, and to demonstrate fully your unheralded genius!
